Reforming trade promotion activities to effectively support businesses in the context of the Covid-19 epidemic

Trade promotion activities, at the core of the National Trade Promotion Program, have achieved positive results and increasingly asserted an important role in trade promotion of the country; to well support and promote the development of export markets, including traditional markets, potential markets and markets that have signed FTA agreements. The Ministry of Industry and Trade has cooperated with trade promotion associations and organizations to constantly innovate the way of trade promotion activities, diversify forms of trade promotion and improve efficiency of trade promotion activities.

In the period 2016 - 2019, the Ministry of Industry and Trade approved 776 national trade promotion projects with a total budget of 418 billion VND. These are focused and key projects and include 3 contents: export promotion, domestic market trade promotion and trade promotion in mountainous, border and island areas. Activities under the National Trade Promotion Program have supported more than 30,000 enterprises to participate, businesses have directly transacted and signed contracts while participating in trade promotion activities with the total value of contracts and direct transactions at foreign trade promotion events reaching over 14.8 billion USD; direct sales at regional fairs and fairs reached over 1,000 billion VND.

In 2020, the National Trade Promotion Program approved a total state support budget of 136 billion VND. Vietnam is one of the first two countries in the world to pioneer organizing online trade promotion conferences in the due to Covid-19. Coupled with promoting the application of information technology, and the application of digital platforms in trade promotion and brand promotion in the direction of direct and online integration to help businesses reach partners and export markets. 

Due to the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic from the beginning of 2020, direct trade promotion activities cannot be carried out as planned. In that context, the Ministry of Industry and Trade took the initiative and quickly took the lead to coordinate with ministries, localities and foreign trade promotion agencies to promote the application of information technology and digital platforms in trade promotion, and in organizing over 500 international trade promotion online conferences. As a result, over 1 million online trading sessions have been conducted, and hundreds of thousands of Vietnamese businesses have been supported to promote online trade with foreign partners on 5 continents. The Ministry of Industry and Trade organized the inaugural virtual Vietnam International Food Industry Expo  (December 9-12, 2020), and having thousands of Vietnamese businesses to participate.

Online trade promotion activities have helped Vietnamese exporters save trade promotion costs while maintaining and developing good relations with foreign partners in all 5 continents (55 export markets). export of Vietnam, including major markets such as China, the US, EU, Japan and potential markets such as Africa, Australia ...), mobilizing the system of Vietnamese trade counselors to  contribute to supporting localities.  Examples of agricultural products by farmers  are being able to be promoted abroad where they usually would otherwise be unable to, and at the same time helping many industrial goods such as textiles garment, footwear, electronics, medical supplies, packaging, to maintain trade promotion activities through effective virtual trade conferences.

In addition, in order to renew trade promotion to adapt to the industrial revolution 4.0 and support businesses to take advantage of opportunities from this revolution, in 2020, the Ministry of Industry and Trade has implemented to build 05 applications, software, including: database system for shared customer management (CRM); Trade promotion ecosystem (VECOBIZ; Trade promotion traceability portal (www.itrace247.com); Goods import and export guide portal (https://vietnam.tradeportal.org); Background E-learning training platform The above applications are expected to be put into operation in 2021.

The Ministry of Industry and Trade has also directly organized and provided technical assistance and coordinated with localities such as Bac Giang, Son La, Phu Tho, Hung Yen, Yen Bai, Tuyen Quang, Lam Dong, Ca Mau ... to organize successful online trade promotion conferences to promote and connect the consumption of agricultural and aquatic products in the season such as litchi, longan, mango, vegetables, fruits ... Up to now, this model has become New & Effective forms of trade promotion - investment that spreads to most localities, associations and businesses across the country, thereby positively contributing to the country's export - import results in the year 2020.
